Lucee or Adobe ColdFusion
It’s uncommon to see most development teams spin up a brand-new project from scratch using ColdFusion. However, there is still a large ecosystem of stable, revenue-generating legacy applications running CFML (ColdFusion Markup Language) powering businesses worldwide. Adobe is still keeping the language maintained and patched but it’s not the go-to environment it was 20 years ago.
When a client comes to us with an existing ColdFusion system, especially one running on a severely outdated version, we explain their options. Should they upgrade to the latest version of Adobe ColdFusion, or is it time to migrate their website to Lucee? Of course the site could be rewritten in an entirely different language like .Net but the additional time and costs involved are usually significant so most often the only options under consideration are Lucee or ColdFusion.
While both engines compile CFML, they represent two completely different long-term strategies. Here is how we evaluate this choice for our clients, and why our recommendation leans towards one side.

Upgrading to Lucee
For the vast majority of legacy ColdFusion systems that enter our pipeline, our recommendation is typically to migrate the application to Lucee.
Lucee is a free, open-source CFML engine that serves as a drop-in replacement for Adobe’s runtime environment. Here is why this is usually the smartest path forward for an aging application:
- Eliminating the “Licensing Tax” on Legacy Code
Adobe ColdFusion requires a hefty commercial licensing fee, which has increasingly moved toward costly subscription models. For a business maintaining a mature, legacy product, paying thousands of dollars annually just to keep the lights on feels like a tax. Migrating to Lucee immediately drops software licensing costs to zero, allowing clients to reallocate that budget toward actual feature development or security updates. - Modernizing Without Rewriting
Moving a legacy system to Lucee gives it a second lease on life. Lucee is built for modern infrastructure. It has a tiny footprint, boots up instantly, and is highly optimized for Docker containers and elastic cloud environments (like AWS or Azure). We can take an app that was trapped on a dusty, on-premise server and smoothly transition it into a modern, auto-scaling cloud setup. - Community-Driven Security and Agility
Older versions of Adobe ColdFusion eventually reach End-of-Life (EOL), meaning Adobe stops releasing security patches for them. Lucee’s open-source community moves quickly to patch security vulnerabilities and roll out incremental performance improvements. Passing compliance audits becomes significantly easier on an actively maintained, open-source engine.
When Do We Stay with Adobe ColdFusion?
While Lucee is often the right choice, our clients always make the final call. Some considerations to be made when choosing whether to maintain and upgrade an application within the Adobe ColdFusion ecosystem are:
- Extreme Codebase Scale and Complexity
If an application is massive, rewriting or refactoring code can introduce substantial QA risks. Adobe ColdFusion has historically included highly proprietary tags for things like complex PDF generation (cfdocument, cfhtmltopdf), native Microsoft Office integrations, or specific encryption standards. If a giant enterprise application relies heavily on these built-in Adobe features, the cost of refactoring them to work on Lucee might outweigh the cost of an Adobe license. - Total Client Commitment to the Adobe Ecosystem
Some clients are corporate entities or government institutions with rigid vendor requirements. If a client is completely committed to the Adobe brand, requires official corporate SLAs, and the annual licensing fees are a drop in the bucket for their budget, staying on Adobe ColdFusion makes perfect sense. In these cases, we focus our energy on upgrading them to the latest version of ColdFusion to keep them secure and compliant.

The Verdict
We treat legacy CFML applications with the respect they deserve—they are stable workhorses that keep businesses running. But keeping them stable shouldn’t mean overpaying for software licenses.
If you are running a heavily outdated ColdFusion site, migrating to Lucee is the most cost-effective way to modernize your tech stack without a painful top-to-bottom rewrite. However, upgrading Adobe ColdFusion to the latest version may be the right choice for larger, deeply integrated enterprise systems where the budget matches the scale.
